Heartburn is a burning sensation and pain in the stomach and chest, behind the breastbone. The symptoms of heartburn are the following: bloating, gas, nausea, shortness of breath and/or an acidic or sour taste in the throat and mouth.

Causes of Heartburn

Heartburn, which is known by different names such as indigestion, bloating, borborygmus and dyspepsia, results from excessive acid in stomach. Blood is 20% acid and 80% alkali an when the proportion of acid in the blood increases, it affects the digestive system in the body causing acidity and heartburn. Acid in body can increase due to many reasons

Ø  Rich and spicy foods

Ø  Improper chewing of food, having large meals, and eating hurriedly.

Ø  Sleep disorder

Ø  Alcohol intake

Ø  Force exerted by uterus on the digestive area and hormone imbalance during pregnancy.

Ø  Unnecessary pressure on digestive tract of overweight people.

Ø  Stress

Ø  Certain antidepressants and sedatives

Ø  Improper gaps between meals and eating right before going to bed

Ø  Constipation, irritable bowel movement.

Ø  Smoking

Ø  Having disproportionate amounts of carbonated beverages such as cold drinks and soda.

Ø  Certain diseases that weaken the esophageal muscle, such as scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, or hiatal hernias.

 

TIP: Doctors no longer recommend drinking milk to reduce heartburn, it has been proven that milk temporarily reduces the symptoms only to increase acid production by the stomach which causes more heartburn.

The best solution for heartburn is the use of herbs and vegetables.

Home remedies for heartburn:

Ø  Drink Aloe Vera juice to heal the intestinal tract.

Ø  Drink Chamomile tea after meals to relieve esophageal irritation.

Ø  Drink a large glass of water at the first sign of heartburn, if the symptoms are not too strong this will help.

Ø  Make a juice using raw potatoes. Wash the potato very well do not peel it, just place it in the juicer, mix it with some other juice for taste and drink immediately after juicing.

Ø  Chew half a tea spoon of Fennel seeds slowly after your meals.

Ø  Keep a single piece of clove in mouth after meals and suck on it gradually.

Ø  Drink a 1 tsp juice of chebulic myrobalan (haritika) mixed with 1 tsp of Emblica Officinalis or Indian gooseberry (amla) juice daily.

Ø  Chew some leaves of basil herb (tulsi) to get relief from blazing, nausea and gastric problem.
