Lice infestation, also known as pediculosis is a common human problem. There are three types of lice – head lice, body lice and pubic lice that infest humans. Lifecycle of lice has three forms – nit, lymph and adult lice. Life of lice is about 30 days. Lice will die if they stay away from human body for more than two days.
Lice infest people of all ages, rich or poor. Lice prefer clean hair because their nits (eggs) stick to cleaner hair much better than oily hair. Beside direct physical contact, using infected person's personal belongings such comb, hair brush, towels, bed linen, etc also spread lice. Children are the most infected with lice than adults.
Easy to prevent, but difficult to treat - good hygiene is the most effective prevention of head lice.
Ø Avoid sharing personal items like combs, brushes, towels, pillows, hats, headwear, etc.
Ø Avoid head to head contact with any person.
Ø Trim your hair to a shorter length as lice cannot find suitable environment in short hair.
Ø Do a regular check in and around the nape of the neck, behind the ears and scalp, especially for children.
Ø If one member of the family is infected with lice, treat all the members of the family at the same time to prevent lice spreading from one head to another.
Some of the Home Remedies to treat Head Lice:
1. Mix ½ cup olive oil with 2-3 tbsp of tea tree oil. Rub into scalp and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash your hair to remove the oil. Then rinse your hair with vinegar as it loosens the holding properties of the eggs and nits on your hair. Wait for 10 mins and rinse with hot water. Repeat vinegar rinse twice. Comb your hair using lice or flea comb to remove any remaining nits.
2. Mix 4-5 drops of tea tree oil with your daily shampoo and use as usual.
3. Warm few tbsp of mayonnaise (depending on who is using it either a child or adult). Slather it on the scalp just like shampoo. Wear a shower cap and sit for 30 minutes. Then wash your hair with normal shampoo. Then use fine toothed comb to get the eggs and bugs out. The oils in the mayonnaise provide lubrication to the hair and scalp, eliminating the ability of the eggs to hold on to the hair shafts. The shower cap cuts off any air flow the eggs needed to remain alive.
4. Saturate your hair with olive oil and wear a shower cap with clip leaving it overnight. Brush out your hair using nit/flea/lice comb. Then wash your hair as usual with your shampoo and conditioner. Next take plain white vinegar and rinse your hair with it. Use warm water to remove vinegar. This dissolves the eggs. Repeat the vinegar rinse till needed.
5. Completely soak hair with olive oil and wrap it in towel for 1-2 hours. Rinse and wash as usual. Work through your hair with fine tooth comb to remove eggs and lice. Repeat in one week.
6. Mix any type of edible oil (vegetable, canola or olive) with vinegar in equal proportion. Add 18-20 drops of tea tree oil. Mix all the 3 ingredients well to get a creamy paste. Apply to damp hair. Massage well onto the scalp and comb through the ends of hair. Wrap a plastic bag around your head for 3 hours or more. Lice and nits will suffocate and slide off easily. Do this at least once a week.
7. Extract the oil by burning the coconut (kobbari chippa). Applying this oil will helps to kill head lice very effectively.
8. Applying of Indian hemp leaves juice to the head kills head lice and also helps to get rid of dandruff problem.
9. Make a fine form of paste by rubbing the bitter almond on floor and applying this paste to hair kills head lice. This is very natural home remedy to kill lice.
10. Applying garlic juice to head kills lice instantly. This is very natural method to kill head lice.
11. Make a paste of vasa with water and applying this mixture will remove lice from your head.
12. Neem oil will kill head lice very effectively.
13. Make a paste with seeds of custard apple and applying this paste to head will clear complete head lice.
14. Applying the mixture made with the help of Seema gorinta roots and mustard oil will kill head lice. This mixture also helps to kill all types of lice in your head very effectively.
15. Dectcoction of Indigo tree roots and juice mixed with three drops of oil applied to head will kill head lice.
16. Make a Mixture by heating the Datura leaves juice and ginger oil. Now massaging with this mixture to your head will helps to kill head lice completely.
17. Mixing the indigo leaves juice with mercury (padarsam) and applying this mixture to the head can helps to get rid of head lice.
18. Mixing the indigo leaves juice with piper betle leaves (tamalapaku) juice and applying this mixture to head helps to kill lice instantly.
19. Make a fine form of paste by mixing the mercury and black datura leaves juice. Now apply this mixture to the plain cloth and tightening this cloth to the head. Keep this cloth for at least three days will help to kill head lice completely. Total head lice will be killed and fall like a rain from your head, when you remove the cloth from your head.
